ever going to be successful. >> you talk about reaching across and trying to build coalitions regardless of party telling people going to represent them. on election night you talked a lot about patriotism. he says it doesn't mean telling our neighbors we are better than them. but tens of millions of americans have been hearing this message from the white house, for the present essentially sing if you don't vote for democrats you're some form of an extremist. you potentially could be destroying this country. as he speak for you in saying that? >> you cannot say that you love the country when you hate half of the people in it. and think about in the case of our race were my definition of patriotism was when i left my family and i put on the uniform in this country. and i lead a paratrooper's over steve overseas in afghanistan for as running against somebody whose definition of patriotism was putting on a baseball cap and asking people to join him on january 6.

loving your country does not meet working to destroy democracy. and i think in order for us to be able to move forward, for us to have a unified measured which we are able to show in the state of maryland it really meant to be able to build a coalition that's going to be broad. a coalition that represented everyone from progressive maryland to the police union. but all who are saying it's not just we have a vote. but we have a voice. in our voice needs to be heard and respected. shannon: the converse of that you mentioned millions of americans are telling half the country you hate them are they are not valuable or their vote is going to be a step toward sake in the country apart that's a dangerous message. >> it is. i member conversation have the guy who was in western maryland in one of the rural the state of maryland. he was telling me about his trials and the fact is working multiple jobs and stilling at point just at the poverty line.

and i told him a bit about what we wanted to do to address that party wanted to focus on things like getting people back to work. focus on job retraining and job rescaling. making sure high school's are not exclusively based on four-year college acceptance rates us up the path for every student it was not my path. and i remember saying to me you have earned my vote. i just have one ask for you, do not forget about us. and i think the thing we have to do in this moment is for every single maryland or and everyone else in their jurisdiction is to say you are not just going to have an important place at the table. but every decision that's going to be driven it's about how we come up with the best solutions is going to bring marylanders together? that's actually going to create pathways for wages and wealth for all of our citizens. shannon: those things sound great on paper how do you pay for them? is it raising taxes? is it cutting government spending how do you fund them? what's is not about raising

taxes. we are very clear on the campaign trail even when people are trying to pull you in that direction. i say i am -- i know i've been a public server for much of my life but i have not been a politician for the thing i do know is this, i have a lead soldiers i've run a small business in the state of maryland a successful small business i'm very good at math. and i know we have right now we have a situation where you have a structural surplus in the state of maryland you have federal dollars that have been brought to the state of maryland that are earmarked for the specific issues and we have a unique opportunity to have a leveraged capitol for a private sector and be able to bring in private sector, nonprofit sector, philanthropy, committee organizations et cetera into the conversation the question is really how we actually utilize capitol properly. and wisely so they can get the larger societal return on that investment part but the answer is not just going to be at here is how i'm going to raise capitol is out there. we need to smart how are playing it. >> better use of the funds and

resource that you currently have without going into the base. shannon: has a lot to speculate about your future. even though you've yet to be sworn in as governor. westmore has never been elected to anything, some backers are already eyeing the white house. do you feel that pressure? you have those ambitions? i member reading something about a military school and high school another student said used to talk around sit around and talk about being president. she remembered that way? it is a part of the plan? >> i don't know what that way but this is going to be relevant to decade. we think of the assets of the state of maryland this is literally the home of cyber command and the nsa and the nih, john hopkins university and some of the top universities in the country for the top hbcus in america are the state of maryland. this is going to be maryland to decade. i'm excited to lead maryland throughout that time. shannon: after that decade aspirations? do you feel that pressure that?

>> i don't. i am a kid who just decades ago i first felt handcuffs on my wrist when i was 11 years old. my mom wasn't immigrant was a single mother who raised three children on her own but she did not your first job that gave her benefits until i was 14. i am living a dream right now. if someone would've said to the 11 year old kids with handcuffs on his wrist that one day you're going to be governor, i never would have believed them. i am in this race and i got into this race and i plan to be the type of governor that wants to make sure stories like mine do not have to be exceptions. it's stories like mine can be rules for how maryland moves. i already know how grateful and thankful i am for the moment we find ourselves in and i am ready to get to work this is going to marilyn's time. >> may be america's time after that we will see. come back and tells what your plans are pretty want to talk to you mentioned your childhood there's a lot of speculation and their only be more intense scrutiny if you do proceed on the path for further political

ambitions about your childhood and representations in your book about growing up or your experience as a young person in maryland. fox 45 in baltimore says there's no evidence you grew up are born there. they talked about you moving to new york as a young man, eventually going to military school in pennsylvania. they said there's no address for you in baltimore until you are attending johns hopkins. they said this they quote their investigation, the story you tell your book is compelling but it may be more fiction than fact but he said it's misleading the public but it does not become an ugly lie until campaign refuses to talk about it. so set the record straight for us. >> there is nothing in my book and anything i have written or that i have ever said that is been exaggerated or misled anybody. i do not have a reason to exaggerate my life. i moved a lot when i was junk not because of choice but because of tragedy. i watch my father die in front of me when i was three years old
