The 2024 season is flying by and we're already approaching the halfway mark in the Major Leagues. We now have all minor league levels in full swing as well with the Dominican Summer League now in session. We've seen plenty of value changes over the last month and several big names who graduated from prospect status, giving us a new No. 1 overall prospect below.

These rankings are geared toward standard 5x5 leagues (AVG) and consider many factors, including performance to date, scouting grades, future projection, and video and data analysis. Or, as I like to call it... PPP, which stands for profile, performance, projection.

While these rankings are more slanted towards long-term fantasy value, proximity and short-term value do play a part in where a prospect lands in my rankings. If you want to see the full Top 500, then head on over to my Patreon!

Fantasy Baseball Prospect Rankings Notes

James Wood (OF - WAS)

With Wyatt Langford graduating, we have a new top dog with James Wood. You honestly can't go wrong with any of the top four as your No. 1 overall, but I gave the slightest of edges to Wood due to his immense power/speed potential. Wood is currently on the IL but was slashing a robust .355/.465/.596 with nine home runs and 10 steals in 202 plate appearances. He also made notable improvements to his walk and strikeout rates, improving them from 11.8% to 17.3% and from 31.5% to 18.3% respectively. No other prospect matches Wood's fantasy ceiling in my eyes.

Carson Williams (SS - TBR)

Welcome to the top 10, Carson Williams. It was another decent jump for Williams this month who continues to showcase a plus power/speed blend this season with 16 doubles, 10 home runs, and 15 steals in 49 games so far. The concern is still how much AVG will he provide, but Williams could be a fantasy star even if he's a .260 hitter given his 25/25 upside. We could even see him later this season with Tampa Bay. However, 2025 is more likely.

Lazaro Montes (OF - SEA)

It's becoming hilarious that Lazaro Montes is still in Low-A. After excelling in 31 games at the level to close out the 2023 season, Montes has continued his dominance here in 2024, slashing .319/.425/.549 in 287 plate appearances, with 13 doubles and 13 home runs. Montes continues to show an advanced approach at the plate and his power is still waiting to be fully unlocked. If Montes can make enough contact long-term, we could be looking at a 35-40 home run hitter that hits around .260 or so.

Xavier Isaac (1B - TBR)

One of the biggest risers within the Top 100 in this update was Xavier Isaac. In 228 plate appearances this season in High-A, Isaac has racked up 15 doubles, 12 home runs, and 13 steals with a .310/.395/.579 slash line. He's deceptively athletic and could provide double-digit home runs annually to pair with more than 25 home runs and a high OBP. It wouldn't shock me to see him receive a promotion to Double-A in the near future.

Agustin Ramirez (C/1B - NYY) & Ben Rice (C/1B - NYY)

As a Red Sox fan, it pains me how high I am on the duo of Agustin Ramirez and Ben Rice. I've been one of the highest Rice rankers since the middle of last season and have been pushing Ramirez aggressively up my rankings this season as well. Ramirez has been one of the best hitters in Double-A so far this season, slashing .290/.374/.571 with 13 doubles, 16 home runs, and 13 steals. I'm not sure how much he runs in the Majors, but Ramirez should bring a solid contact/approach blend along with plus raw power. A promotion to Triple-A is long overdue.

BEN. RICE. AGAIN.

— Somerset Patriots (@SOMPatriots) May 22, 2024

Meanwhile, Rice has been excelling at the plate since the start of last season but still gets undervalued and under-ranked since he's 25 years old. Rice is slashing .275/.393/.532 with 15 home runs and nine steals in 60 games this season and has 35 home runs and 20 steals in 133 games since the start of last season with a stellar .302/.416/.577 slash line. Given his blend of contact, approach, power, and speed, Rice could develop into an impact fantasy catcher or first baseman.

Noah Schultz (SP - CHW)

With Paul Skenes set to graduate soon and the rest of the top pitching prospects either dealing with injuries or less-than-stellar performances, there's a real chance that Noah Schultz will become the new top pitching prospect at some point this season. A 6-foot-9 lefty, Shultz has above-average or better command and control over three pitches that could all wind up as plus offerings long-term. Those tools have been on full display this season as Schultz currently has a 3..14 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, 4.2% walk rate, and a 38% strikeout rate in 43 innings.

Zebby Matthews (SP - MIN)

Another month and another sizeable leap up my rankings for Daniel Zebulon Matthews. After posting a 112/15 K/BB ratio last year in 105.1 innings, Matthews decided that wasn't good enough and currently has 70 strikeouts to just TWO walks in 58.1 innings. This isn't just your typical high floor/low ceiling command specialist either and Matthews can miss bats at a high clip with a good four-pitch mix. He's a no-doubt top-10 pitching prospect right now and could be in the top five soon.
